When a Revit building information model is so big that it needs to be split into ‘sectors’ just to fit onto a sheet, most BIM managers turn to Revit scope boxes and dependent views to keep the project well-organized. The IdeateApps collection of nine productivity tools includes several tools that can be applied to this large building project challenge:

Watch this video to see exactly how this can be done, saving you hours of time while ensuring the highest level of consistency for view and sheet naming conventions.

Your head could ache with the dull threat of a day spent handling COBie Asset numbering, or you could automate that task and be done with it quickly with Ideate ReNumber, one of the tools in the IdeateApps collection of productivity tools for Revit. This excellent idea was inspired by Sheena Shook — BIM Project Manager at Modulus Consulting — who is frequently immersed in streamlining COBie deliverables for her customers.

Here are the top three reasons to use Ideate ReNumber for COBie Asset numbering, even if you also use the COBie Extension for Revit:

  1. Ideate ReNumber includes a built-in rule to automate filling out the COBie.Component.AssetIdentifier parameter.
  2. The built-in rule can be easily customized to combine any project-specific parameter. IdeateApps subscribers should contact support with any questions about customizing Ideate ReNumber.
  3. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Ideate ReNumber can assign the room number for elements even when the room exists within a linked file.

You can find this built-in COBie rule within the Bonus Rule folder. Once the rule is loaded, it’s easiest to use while in a schedule view that includes the COBie.Component.AssetIdentifier parameter. If you are using the COBie Extension for Revit, open the schedule called “COBie.Component.”

MEP engineers, did you miss our recent webinar or would you like to see it again? Here’s a link to the recording

During this 30-minute webinar, I focused on Ideate ReNumber’s ability to streamline MEP workflows of updating Revit element numbers and names. Ideate ReNumber is part of the IdeateApps collection. It plays an important role in model management for engineering and construction companies by providing a way to efficiently document building elements with logical numbering schemas.

The presentation includes:

  • A quick tour of the rules for MEP workflows that ship with Ideate ReNumber, including base rules for frequently used workflows like grids, lighting and fabrication parts, as well as bonus rules for workflows like conduits, COBie requirements, and ducts
  • Step-by-step instructions on how to create custom rules to meet your company’s requirements or those of a client
  • A demonstration of how to use Ideate ReNumber to quickly renumber MEP elements, including how to do it in a Schedule

We host these webinars to help clients get the most out of their Ideate Software tools. If you have a topic you’d like us to cover, please let us know

Recently, I had the thrill and honor of welcoming Steinberg Hart’s BIM-VDC Director Gautam Shenoy to a webinar to share his knowledge of product delivery. With more than 15 years of BIM experience and 10 years of experience working with Ideate Software tools, Gautam has developed a lot of best practices and successful workflow options. He presented some of them at our webinar, which covered some of the following topics:

  • Questions to ask when trying to win a project or on the path to procurement
  • How design technology connects with data
  • Project delivery methods
  • Timelines
  • How to effectively measure ROI

Throughout the session, Gautam shared how he and his team use Ideate Software tools to streamline processes, keep their models clean, and enhance collaboration with all stakeholders, including non-Revit users. He also shared this spreadsheet he created to determine the return on investment of IdeateApps and convey that ROI to leadership (click on the image):

Here are some comments from people in attendance:

  • “Definitely liked the ROI slide.”
  • “Gautam's graphic representation of his team's workflow was fantastic!”
  • “Gautam clearly explained how the Ideate Software solutions can be applied to many aspects of the AEC industry and for different project scenarios (design-bid, design-build, etc).”
