This is the first post in a series of three provided by BIMAGE Consulting, our value-added reseller in Singapore. Keep an eye out for additional posts on how our other Revit productivity tools also contribute to successful BCA BIM e-submissions in that country.

Established in 2010, BIMAGE is the leading technology company in BIM/VDC and Digitized Construction within Singapore. BIMAGE helps customers optimize design development, construction and operation phases of buildings and infrastructure while using various technologies, including Revit and Ideate Software tools plus other BIM software such as virtual design and construction, augmented reality/virtual reality, geographic information systems, cloud, mobile and more.

The Challenge – Complying with Varying E-Submission Requirements

For several years, Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has mandated that design consultants submit their native BIM models for new developments with a gross floor area of more than 5,000 square meters through an e-submission system for design approval. E-submission is voluntary for developments with a gross floor area less than or equal to 5,000 square meters.

In line with this, BCA published several Code of Practices for BIM e-submission to clearly define the requirements for each discipline. There are also templates for different BIM software along with the respective guidelines and recommended processes.

Using the e-submission system, design consultants must obtain approval from seven different authorities before commencing the construction work for any project, and each has different criteria and requirements.

When design consultants prepare the BIM models for the submission, they often spend a significant amount of time:

  • Creating multiple views and sheets for all regulatory agencies
  • Adhering to the various naming conventions and standards
  • Completing extensive quality checks

Some examples include removing worksets, making sure all views are located on the correct View Category, updating the cover page, and ensuring the BIM model meets all the requirements.

Speeding the Process with Three IdeateApps Tools

With Ideate Software tools, most of these tasks can be quickly completed within hours or even minutes. Here are some examples of how three tools within the IdeateApps collection speed the process, eliminate errors, and reduce frustrations:

  1. Ideate ViewCreator is a perfect tool to help consultants create multiple views with customizable rule sets and criteria. While duplicating the required views, consultants can easily adjust many settings, including:
    • View naming
    • View scales
    • View templates
    • Scope boxes
  2. Ideate SheetManager is used by consultants to create multiple new sheets and manage the views on sheets, as well as perform one-click sheet cloning and view alignments to satisfy submission needs.
  3. Ideate SpellCheck can then be used to check the spelling of all sheets at once, so the team can spot mistakes and make corrections in time.

Undoubtedly, IdeateApps is a valuable productivity application that assists in the BCA BIM e-submission process. BIMAGE Consulting has helped many consultants to adopt Ideate Software workflows on multiple projects.

Revit allows a dizzying array of sophisticated options to display or hide elements within the building information model. Every model manager knows about Visibility Graphics and Reveal Hidden Elements, but layer on top of that Phasing, View Filters, Linked Files and/or Scope Boxes and things start to get complicated.

Now add in the fact that you have new staff that might just ignore workset definitions or decide to make a new level because they can’t find the one they want in the elevation, and you’re headed for a Revit Visibility Evil Spell that can baffle the most seasoned Revit warrior on their quest for the perfect documentation! Before you even begin to understand the specific visibility issue, how do you select the element if you can’t see it?

Ideate XRay Selection Wizard

You need a magical wizard. Well, it just so happens that Ideate XRay, part of the IdeateApps collection, has a powerful wizard to help even the most desperate Revit Muggle.

Ideate XRay Selection Wizard

Ideate XRay comes with a powerful Selection Wizard that helps you filter both visible and invisible elements within a view in order to easily select the element you need to diagnose. After selecting the element via the Ideate XRay Selection Wizard, you can use the powerful diagnostic tools within Ideate XRay to review and fix visibility issues while continuing to interact with any Revit command while Ideate XRay is open and at your fingertips.

Ideate XRay Selection Wizard

The Ideate XRay Selection Wizard will appear by default if nothing is selected within Revit when you choose to initiate Ideate XRay, however you can always access the Ideate XRay Selection Wizard from the main Ideate XRay dialog:

  • Open Ideate XRay from the IdeateApps ribbon panel
  • Choose your Ideate XRay Selection Wizard method
  • Select the element you are looking for, depending on the method
  • Make sure the target view is set to the view in which you wish to find the element
  • Choose the Find Element button on the main dialog
  • Review the information from Ideate XRay
  • Choose Show Me, Fix, or More Options as possible selections
  • Using Revit, initiate the proper commands to fix the visibility issue

Please read our online Help topic about the Ideate XRay Selection Wizard, and you also review the full online Help topics on using Ideate XRay for Revit.

To learn more about this process and to see quick examples of all four selection methods within the Ideate XRay Selection Wizard, be sure to watch this short video

Want to simplify your Revit data challenges? If so, this webinar is for you.

Ideate Software is all about helping you confidently manage Revit model data. Part of that help is through Ideate Software’s robust support services. We have online Help files for each product, short how-to videos, live and recorded classes, blog posts, and a technical support team made up of all Ideate Software employees.

Watch the recording of this webinar to get an overview and demonstration of each of our Revit productivity tools and how they help users manage their Revit data challenges:

  1. Ideate BIMLink – Take Revit model data into Microsoft Excel where you can copy/paste, fill down, concatenate, find/replace, translate to other languages, and more. Then bring the updated data back into your Revit project.
  2. Ideate Explorer – A true model browser that allows you to audit your BIM models with certainty. With it, you can find anything in your model. It comes with Ideate Query, which allows you to refine a selection of elements based on a large selection of parameters, and Ideate Warnings Manager, which offers many more features than the Revit warnings manager and makes reviewing and addressing warnings an easy task.
  3. Ideate StyleManager – Aggregates essential graphic style and visibility controls within a single solution, so you can find non-standard styles and decide whether to keep, merge or delete them. This task is nearly impossible to safely accomplish using the native Revit tools.
  4. Ideate Sticky – Allows you to live-link Excel files as schedules, or Word, PDF, or Excel files as images into your Revit projects. Changes to the documents are automatically reflected in Revit.
  5. IdeateApps – A collection of nine tools that simplify common Revit tasks. This webinar covered Ideate SmartDelete, Ideate ReNumber, Ideate SheetManager and Ideate ViewCreator
